Your Guide to Easy Summer Smoothies

Summer is here, and there’s so much to do here at Sportsplex! From swimming to camps to your regular fitness routine. What else do I think of when it comes to summer? How about all the delicious, fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season? Farmer’s markets, strawberry picking, and icey cold treats!

When it comes to a super-smoothie, like so many other things, homemade is best. Many of the juice bar type concoctions are packed full of sugar and lack the whole food goodness you think you’re getting. No need for complex recipes, though. Here’s a simple guide to making a nutrient-packed smoothie:

  1. Start with a good blender. Because you’ll likely be using some frozen items, having the ability to blend well is key. You don’t have to spend a fortune, but read reviews and get the best quality in your budget.

  2. Pick a liquid. 4-8 ounces is usually a good place to start. Water, unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened soy milk, low fat cow’s milk, unsweetened hemp milk, and iced green tea are all solid options!

  3. Pick a protein powder. Aim for 20-30g of protein.

  4. Pick a veggie. 1-2 handfuls are perfect! If you choose a watery vegetable (think cucumber or celery), adjust the amount of liquid you use.

  5. Pick a fruit. 1-2 handfuls of fruit too! You can use frozen or fresh. It’s a great way to save some ‘about to expire’ fruit–freeze it for smoothies!

  6. Add a thumb size portion of fat. Nuts, when blended well, add a nice consistency.

  7. Add ice as desired for a summer punch 🙂

I’d love to hear how you make your favorite smoothies! Have a favorite? Share it in our Facebook Community: SPX On the Go!
